Foreword
WELCOME TO
LONDON
By Harry Theochari
Chair of Maritime UK and Partner, Global Head of Transport, at Norton Rose Fulbright
On behalf of industry, welcome to the UK, and welcome to London. We are delighted to welcome friends, partners and new
colleagues to this global, maritime capital. Across the world, our maritime sector is
responding to signi cant challenges, and preparing to capitalise upon the many opportunities that those challenges present. The UK has been at the forefront of maritime developments for centuries, and today, both industry and government are determined to play a leading role in shaping our collective maritime future.
To respond to those challenges and provide
the big answers to the big questions, we must collaborate. Not just within our countries, but between countries. That’s what LISW is all about. The fantastic programme of conferences, seminars, receptions and meetings will bring together the brightest minds and most senior gures to ensure that through thought-provoking and robust discussion, we can together achieve more than we do alone.
Maritime UK is delighted to be hosting several major events throughout the week. These include a tremendous programme of events at the Global Trade Hub in the Leadenhall Building, the of cial Welcome Reception at Banqueting House with
The Princess Royal, launch of our new ‘state of the maritime nation’ report in Parliament and a major Careers Hub aboard the NLV Pharos; part of our campaign to attract future talent to maritime. We are particularly pleased that this year’s LISW is about more than just London, and more than just shipping. The breadth and depth of our sector will be on full display as our maritime regions play their part as do our ports, engineering, services and leisure marine industries.
Our maritime sector today has a higher profile than for decades in the UK, and we’re determined to do all we can, working with government, to enhance our competitiveness, drive growth in our coastal communities, minimise the sector’s impact on the environment, innovate the technologies of tomorrow, and invest in our people.
Many of you have asked me about Brexit. Whilst there are plenty of events that will look at this specifically, allow me to make one thing very clear. Regardless of the type or timing of Brexit, the UK will remain the competitive, dynamic, reliable and high-quality maritime centre that you have always known.
Enjoy LISW and I look forward to seeing you throughout the week! l
