The overarching theme of London International Shipping Week 2019 (LISW19), International Trade in a Changing World, could hardly be more appropriate. London is the historic centre of world trade and world shipping and stands today
at the heart of international commerce. Its long- standing maritime institutions have been servicing the global shipping industry for centuries and that role continues today.
LISW, now seen as the ‘must attend’ international maritime event, has attracted the global industry leaders to London. During this momentous week, trade and commerce will be rst and foremost in
the minds of the thousands of shipowners, shippers, politicians, regulators and maritime professionals descending on Britain’s thriving capital to celebrate the fourth LISW, which shows every sign of being even bigger and better than ever before.
While Britain, like its European partners and the rest of the world, continues to struggle to come to terms with the uncertainties surrounding Brexit and what the future may hold, no-one is in any doubt that the key lies in international trade. Incoming Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, in one of his rst policy announcements, unveiled plans to create up
to ten free ports across the UK in order to ensure that Britain is ‘ready to trade post-Brexit’.
Maritime UK, meanwhile, launched the Coastal Powerhouse, a brand-new initiative which sets
out the measures needed to unlock the potential
of Britain’s coastal communities. This includes investing in maritime research and innovation in key areas like decarbonisation, unlocking new private investment in ports, investing in connectivity and infrastructure, and backing industry-led regional cluster hubs. All in the name of creating the necessary conditions to facilitate trade.
While London can be considered the beating heart of international shipping, it is also the gateway
