Award-winning women’s leadership coach, Kate Bollanou, has been invited to address an audience at the Women in Shipping Summit during the London International Ship-ping Week on the 10th September – having turned her frustrations into her motivation to help other women.
Being the only non-UK national, as well as the youngest and only female member of a broking team, Kate struggled to find her voice. After nearly six years working as a shipbroker in London and while expecting her second child, she was made redundant.
“The situation I faced during my years as a shipbroker is not uncommon. The fear of being penalised is what keeps women from speaking up about the prejudice they face on a daily basis.”
Following the release of her best-selling book “She is Unstoppable”, which Kate co-authored, she is now working on her second book which focuses on helping women in the shipping industry develop their executive presence.
Research from the Maritime HR Association showcases that only 7% of the management positions in the shipping industry are held by women. Speaking ahead of her talk next month, Kate said:
“I’m looking forward to addressing the factors that influence the way women in the shipping industry progress in their careers. Being an ambitious woman in a male-dominated industry can be very challenging, as you find yourself up against old-fashioned mentalities held by a big part of the decision-making parties. Apart from leadership skills, you al-so need to develop self-confidence and perseverance.”
London International Shipping Week is a must-attend global event of the industry, where experts are called to present their ideas and findings to the world. There are multiple events, workshops and conferences across London, which highlight the City’s key role in the global maritime industry.
