The London Maritime Arbitration in a Changing World event, jointly hosted by the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) and Maritime London, and hosted at the offices of Reed Smith LLP, will focus on the future of London maritime arbitration and the challenges it faces in coming years with new markets, changes in technology and the need for diversity in the qualifications and background of arbitrators and parties.
Focus: London Maritime Arbitration is currently dominant in the international dispute resolution marketplace. How will it maintain that position in the face of competition from other centres?
Almost all the parties who choose maritime arbitration in London are overseas businesses. What do they expect of London arbitrators?
As shipping expands East, how can London arbitration show that it is open to other cultural influences and fair?
What new technologies may influence the conduct of arbitration in future? Will they contribute to increase speed of resolution and lower cost?
What qualifications do foreign parties expect of the arbitrators they appoint? Can non-legally qualified and foreign resident arbitrators be attracted to join the existing pool? Can more women arbitrators be appointed?
These questions will be debated in the session involving speakers from London and abroad and with maximum opportunities for audience participation.
The event will conclude with a networking lunch.
