Koji Sekimizu joined Japan’s Ministry of Transport in 1977, rising to Deputy Director of the Environment Division and later the Safety Standards Division of the Maritime Technology and Safety Bureau.
In July 1989, he joined the IMO as Technical Officer in the Sub-Division for Technology, Maritime Safety Division, being appointed Head of the Technology Section in 1992 and performing secretariat functions to the MSC and MEPC/BCH Working Groups. In 1997, he became Senior Deputy Director and in 2000, Director, of the Marine Environment Division. In 2004, he was appointed Director of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Division. On 1 December 2011 he was appointed the IMO’s seventh Secretary- General for the period 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2015.
Mr. Sekimizu is married and has a daughter and a son, and two granddaughters.
