KEEPING SEA LANES FREE
AND OPEN
By The First Sea Lord
Admiral Tony Radakin, CB ADC
On behalf of the Royal Navy, I am delighted to welcome you to London International Shipping Week
2021. The timing of this year’s
event in London could not be more fortuitous: as global vaccination rates increase, the
world opens again for business and we mark the return of the blended in-person and virtual premier global maritime event in London, the world’s greatest maritime city.
The pandemic has highlighted the vital role
of the global shipping industry to interna onal trade and interna onal prosperity. It has shone
a light on the importance of shipbuilding, our merchant seafarers and the maintenance of keeping interna onal sea lanes free and open for all.
I am once again really pleased that the Royal Navy will play a central role at London Interna onal Shipping Week, with the amphibious ship HMS ALBION ac ng as the venue for the shipbuilding recep on and serving as the backdrop for the launch of the green shipbuilding campaign.
The challenges of climate change are ones with which we will all have to wrestle, and with the
UK hos ng both the green shipbuilding launch in London and COP26 in Glasgow we are reinforcing just how important internal coopera on, between governments and industry, will be as we work together to face the challenges of the future. n
