As we all begin to emerge from a dif cult year it is a great pleasure to look forward to some face-to-face interaction with the industry during LISW21. The last year has shown once again, the importance of the maritime sector for the UK and how globally we are connected by the sea.
We haven’t cured ‘sea blindness’ but when
the shelves were empty in the supermarkets the general public began to appreciate how much they rely on ports and depend on the mari me sector. It is a £46bn per annum industry that supports the UK and provides £12bn in exports value. The Society of Mari me Industries represents the mari me engineering sector which has been servicing and maintaining shipping but also developing new technologies and services to meet current and future challenges.
New for LISW21, we are delighted to be hos ng a crossover event on board HMS Albion where we are bringing together the defence sector exhibi ng at DSEI (ExCel) and the LISW commercial mari me industry. There is strong
cross pollina on of companies and opportuni es between the sectors, so we are delighted to be bringing these events together for the rst me.
Autonomy has been accelerated by the pandemic and our Tuesday event will highlight the current state of play in both the defence and commercial worlds and how autonomy is being adopted. A further new event for LISW21 on Friday 17 is aimed squarely at the engineering sector and providing online introduc ons to the technical teams of European shipowners and managers. An opportunity for the UK supply chain to start a new dialogue and showcase their technology.
LISW21 will certainly be di erent to previous edi ons but all partners in the event are taking the opportunity to re-evaluate and innovate to bring industry together with many more being able to join events due to the use of hybrid and online events.
Enjoy LISW21 wherever you are and the SMI team is looking forward to mee ng you online and in-person. n
