Moving from empowerment to action

The Women in Shipping Summit, the first ever event 100% dedicated to professional development for women in the maritime industry, to be hosted during London International Shipping Week 2019.

Announced on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2019, the Women in Shipping Summit will take place during London International Shipping Week 2019 (LISW19), 8-13 September 2019. As an officially endorsed event of LISW19, the summit will take place at 10-11 September 2019 at the Mary Ward House Conference & Exhibition Centre, London.

The event is focussed on professional development for women working in shipping, on board and on shore. The two-day summit will feature a line-up of some of the most impressive names in shipping, both men and women who will tell the story of their journey through the industry to inspire and empower personal career development plans.

Over the course of the summit there will be keynotes, presentations and sessions which will cover opportunities for diversity, challenging unconscious bias, health, mentoring and attracting talent, and helping women find their executive voice.

Joanna Sawh, Crewing Manager at K Line LNG Shipping, believes that the Women in Shipping Summit “will be great platform to present shipping as viable work place for other women who may not know much about shipping, but also show our rather traditional industry that this is change for the better, and it is inevitable.”

Sawh will be presenting on the first day of the event about maternity, return to work and working arrangements. Specifically, she will be speaking about maternity and recruitment for alignment, “both topics are close to my heart,” she says.

“Women constitute 50% of the population. Rough statistics show that in shipping female seafarers are only 2%,” Sawh continues. “Biology is one of the reasons why employers are hesitant to be more open to women on board and ashore. Also, sharing experiences among women in shipping is important, so we can learn from each other and educate those who are not entirely inclusive.”

Some of the speakers joining Sawh at the event include:

While not exclusively for women, the summit will focus on facts, experiences and practical sessions dealing with the specific, day-to-day challenges faced by women in the industry. The summit aims to present solutions to improve the status quo – enabling attendees with a set of practical advice and tools.
